Hide and Seek with Wildlife: Part 19

As I mentioned in my first post of this series, I shall share photos of wildlife in this section to showcase their amazing camouflaging abilities. Spotting wildlife in such a situation is exciting. Here is a simple one for the weekend! The location is from Great Himalayan National Park, Himachal Pradesh.

Himachal Pradesh, 2024

Image: It is still unbelievable for me that Ashwin could spot this creature in the midst of this Deodar forest. You might be able to spot the bird in this photo, but when you are walking in the forest, the colours and the patterns are much difficult to decipher and interpret.

A Himalayan Wood Owl is seen perched between two close branches of the Deodar tree.

We heard this bird every night, but spotting one is quite difficult. The cryptic colouration of the owl matches with the moss-laden deodar forest and it is almost impossible to fund day roosting sites of this bird. The photo above has been clicked by increasing the exposure so that the bird can be seen.
